Each year, VCPAC recognizes outstanding contributions to the students in our school district at our May General Meeting.

We are looking for your help in nominating these amazing individuals for one of our nine awards:.

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2024/2025 VCPAC Executive.  The Annual General Meeting will take place on April 9 from 7-9 pm at Sir James Douglas Elementary, as well as on Zoom.  As per our Bylaws, a quorum of 15 PACs represented in the room (no proxy votes are permitted) is required to elect the new executive. 
Have you considered serving on the executive? Now could be your chance, all positions are open for nomination. Please have a sponsoring PAC send in your nomination to .  This should be done by the Friday before the Annual General Meeting to ensure it is received.  Nominations may also be made on the floor.
Below is an outline of VCPAC's purpose and a description of each role.  

Purpose of VCPAC 

  • to advocate for the rights and support the success of every student,
  • to promote and support meaningful Parent engagement in the public education system, and
  • to advise the Greater Victoria Board of Education on any matters relating to public education in School District 61

VCPAC Executive Roles:
 

Chair

  1. preside at all General, Additional and Executive Meetings of the VCPAC;
  2. be an ex-officio member of all VCPAC Committees except the Nominating Committee;
  3. be the official spokesperson for the VCPAC;
  4. ensure an agenda is prepared and presented at each general meeting;
  5. submit an annual report.

Vice-Chair

  1. will perform the duties of the Chair during his/her absence or upon the resignation of the Chair, until such time as the membership fills the vacancy.  
Secretary
 
  1. record and keep minutes of the proceedings of Executive Meetings;
  2. proofread draft minutes of general meetings 
Treasurer

  1. receive all monies, issue receipts, and ensure the payment of authorized expenditures;
  2. report as required by the Executive, on the state of the VCPAC finances;
  3. maintain proper books of account and have them available for audit or review if required by the Executive or membership;
  4. prepare a budget at the direction of the Executive for Membership approval at the AGM; and
  5. prepare a financial report for the AGM.

Directors (5)

  1. serve in a capacity to be determined by the council at the time of election, and at other times as the council requires

Join us for the 2nd Celebration of Excellence and Achievement for students in our communities  (a.k.a. Black Grad 2024). The inaugural COEA was a free event that happened in 2023, and over 30 students were recognized!   If you know a child who is transitioning into middle or high school, or graduating from high school, college, or university we want to honour them! 
 
COEA is a family and community celebration to honour K-12 and post-secondary students of African descent who have achieved a significant milestone in their academic journey. We are in the process of selecting the date, which will be either Thursday, May 2nd or Thursday, May 9th, 2024, in the Victoria area. This ceremony and reception include various traditions, food, gifts, guest speakers, music, and fun.

Attendees will receive further details (including the location of ceremony) by Monday, February 5, 2024.

This event is the beginning of the work to fulfil resolution 2023.07:

"Be it resolved that BCCPAC create a sustainable program to train a minimum of two parent advocate volunteers in any and all BC school districts wishing to participate. And that this program be established with a goal to begin training parent advocates in the 2023-2024 school year and continue until there is adequate resources allocated within the Ministry of Education and Child Care, Office of the Ombudsperson or otherwise deemed redundant."

The Inclusive Education and Anti-Racism Committees are planning the discussion to seek feedback from membership. Join us to brainstorm and help shape what parent advocacy training might look like!
